Publications, Inc. , 2003Dr. To boost animal welfare, a strategy called environmental enrichment has been used in zoos and aquariums. Environmental enrichment is described as the addition of stimuli or provision of choice that consequences in the benefit of animal well being , and is regularly being applied in farm and laboratory settings . Bloomsmith et al. 1991 identified five major styles of enrichment, each of that may be subdivided: social touch or noncontact, occupational psychological or activity, physical enclosure or accessories, sensory visual, auditory or other stimuli, and dietary beginning or type . Spacial comlexity of enclosures during the early rearing period results in behavioral flexibility in plenty of species of teleost. For example, enriched environments were shown to stimulate exploratory behavior in hatchery bred North Sea cod , enhance foraging conduct in Atlantic salmon , and increase cognitive competencies in Simochromis pleurospilus .
