The Betta smaragdina, just like the Betta splendens, are available widely, living in the shallow rice paddies, ditches, and thelowland spaces beside the rice fields. This buffer area is a free space that thefarmer uses for freeing the fish and also for irrigation to and from his ricefield. Naturally this area is flooded throughout many of the year, except maybe inthe dry season when it may remain only wet mud. One of the fairway fightingfish breeders I met in SakonNakorn province told me that fish combating in Isan country maygo back over 200 years. He was 53 years old. He said that his father had told himhis grandfather was a big player in the fighting fish game.
